NONE OF THE ABOVE – AN HONEST CHOICE ON THE BALLOT PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 23 May 2008
by Tom DeWeese
Fed up with your choices for President or Congress this year? Tired of having to choose the “lesser of two Tom DeWeeseevils?” Want to break the stranglehold special interest groups and multi-national corporations have on the election process? Cheer up voters – help may be on the way!

Imagine looking down the list of candidates on your ballot and finding none rally appeal. None seem to offer satisfaction as an answer to the issues which concern you. If only there was something else you could do besides voting for these candidates…

Then, imagine you look a little further down the ballot and find something new. It says NONE OF THE ABOVE. It’s a final choice listed after the candidates in every single category – from president to congress to city council. What does it mean?

According to Bill White of NOTA.org, it means you – rather than the power brokers -- have the power to decide who will hold office.

Says White, when the votes are tallied, if NONE OF THE ABOVE gets a majority of votes over any of the candidates listed, then NONE OF THE ABOVE wins. And that means NONE of those candidates will win the office.

The Election will have to be held again and new candidates will have to try to win the public’s support.

Fixing the election process, says White, could be that simple. You the voter would be completely in the driver’s seat with the power to reject candidates, forcing a new election with new choices.

White believes that political parties would be forced to provide candidates the voters want – or face being rejected.

To assure NONE OF THE ABOVE works as an effective election tool, it must be binding, rather than simply a protest write in campaign. That means it must be officially placed on ballots either through state legislative action or by ballot initiative.

NONE OF THE ABOVE is not a new concept. It is actually on the ballot in Nevada. However, in that state it isn’t binding. Moreover, legislation to create permanent NONE OF THE ABOVE ballot status has been introduced in many state legislatures over the years, but has never really caught on as an issue.

However, White believes, as candidate choices from the major parties, particularly this year’s presidential choices, seem to grow less satisfying to voters, perhaps the idea of NONE OF THE ABOVE will catch on with voters across the country.

White has now joined forces with the Texas-based American Land Foundation and the Virginia-based American Policy Center to begin to introduce the NONE OF THE ABOVE concept to a national audience.

Activists interested in learning more about the idea can go to Bill White’s web site, http://www.NOTA.org where background information and even sample legislation is available.
