Amnesty Bill for Illegals Unlikely to Pass Senate, Group Says Thursday, November 20 @ 12:53:49 CST by illegal_immigration (104 reads) | A comprehensive “amnesty” bill to provide illegal aliens a path to citizenship is unlikely to pass the U.S. Senate next year because Republicans will be more united in opposition and Democrats will be reticent to burn political capital on the issue, according to a public policy group that tracks population growth in the U.S.
In October, Numbers USA updated its report card on U.S. senators in regard to key votes cast from 2005 to 2008 on immigration policy. Numbers USA favors policy changes that would reduce the annual flow of immigration to where it was historically prior to the late 20th century.
On the Republican side of the aisle, U.S. senators who have held permissive views toward immigration in the past have either left office or altered their position over the past year, Roy Beck, executive director of Numbers USA, told CNSNews.com.

Napolitano emerges for Homeland Security job Thursday, November 20 @ 12:41:22 CST by illegal_immigration (72 reads) | WASHINGTON – Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, an early Barack Obama supporter from the southwestern part of the country, is the likely choice for the job of secretary of homeland security, a top Obama adviser said Thursday.
These adviser cautioned that no final decision has been made on the position, which involves directing the massive department created by Congress in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States.
The adviser agreed to discuss the situation only on grounds of anonymity because of the private nature of the screening process for Obama's Cabinet. Napolitano, who once was Arizona's attorney general, was among the first of the Democratic governors to commit to him.

L.A. to pay nearly $13 million over May Day melee during immigration march Thursday, November 20 @ 12:29:28 CST by illegal_immigration (69 reads) | The settlement would mark one of the largest payouts ever made to resolve LAPD misconduct. Department has sanctioned officers and trained force to prevent another such incident.
The city of Los Angeles would pay nearly $13 million to immigration protesters and bystanders injured by Los Angeles police officers during a melee at MacArthur Park last year, according to sources familiar with a tentative settlement reached by both sides.
If approved by the City Council, the mayor and the judge overseeing the bulk of the plaintiffs' claims against the city, the settlement would go far in bringing to a close an embarrassing and damaging chapter in the LAPD's recent history. It would mark one of the largest payouts ever made to resolve LAPD misconduct.

Wal-Mart trucker smuggles illegals across border Wednesday, November 19 @ 01:28:09 CST by illegal_immigration (165 reads) | Federal agents say trailer used to transport aliens at least 6 times
The Wal-Mart slogan of "Always" is taking on new meaning after a company truck was used as many as six times recently to smuggle illegal aliens into the U.S. through Texas.
The driver, Alejandro Hernandez, 50, and two women were arrested for their roles in the operation.
Hernandez took a delivery to a Wal-Mart in McAllen, Texas, and then loaded his trailer with illegals in Edinburg, the McAllen Monitor reported. A mother and daughter, Santos Moreno and Leonor Gomez, brought the aliens to Edinburg in their 15-passenger van and transferred them into his truck before proceeding on to a checkpoint.

San Diego - Border Patrol claiming success along local fence Wednesday, November 19 @ 01:11:43 CST by illegal_immigration (118 reads) | The Border Patrol is claiming success along a formerly chaotic five-mile stretch of the border between the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa ports of entry, where fencing was raised and reinforced with razor-studded concertina wire.
Tuesday, agents in San Diego celebrated the completion of the wire project, begun last December and mostly finished about two months ago. According to the agency, both illegal-crossing arrests and assaults against agents in the area are down by more than 50 percent.
However, a growing number of apprehensions and assaults are now occurring west of the San Ysidro port of entry, and overall arrests in San Diego County continue to rise. And while smugglers are having a harder time leading people over the fence with flexible ladders as they once did, inventive ones are now using battery-powered saws to cut through it instead.

The Journal News • November 17, 2008
Now that Latinos have helped Democrats regain the highest office in the
land and bought into the promise of a problem-solving president, there
is hope for another attempt to overhaul the immigration laws.
But there is also a strain of "No, we can't."
The economic downturn and the notoriously toxic nature of
immigration politics have left some skeptical over seeing any action
soon on bills that have stalled repeatedly in Congress. For a while, at
least, it's "no se puede."
"In the best of times, this issue doesn't lend itself for a quick
fix in the beginning of an administration," said Muzaffar Chishti,
director of the Migration Policy Institute at New York University
School of Law. "And these are not the best of times."

Special driver's license for noncitizens raises concerns Tuesday, November 18 @ 09:11:37 CST by admin (151 reads) |
To get to her job cleaning other people's houses, Maria depends on her
car. Without it, the native of Monterrey, Nuevo León, says she would be
hard-pressed to keep a job. Without the job, she would not be able to
provide for her family or help pay her daughter's tuition at Austin
Community College.
Maria has a Texas driver's license, which she got after coming here 16
years ago on a temporary visa. The visa expired long ago, meaning she
is no longer in the country legally. Maria renewed her license anyway,
because the Texas Department of Public Safety did not require that she
prove her visa was still valid. (Maria — not her real name — and other
unauthorized immigrants spoke to the American-Statesman on condition of
anonymity.)
The DPS says it does not know how many noncitizens with expired visas
renewed their licenses over the years, but it stopped the practice in
May.

CHICAGO — Whether President-elect Barack Obama plans to deal with the
nation’s immigration system quickly after taking office, reminders of
the problem are resurfacing.
Petitions collected Saturday in Chicago at a church in the Pilsen
neighborhood will be sent to Obama next week demanding that immigration
raids be dramatically scaled back under his administration. Signed by
U.S. citizens on behalf of friends or family in the country illegally,
the letters also called for new action on immigration reform within the
first year of Obama’s presidency.
Meanwhile, activists in several cities are planning a January march
in Washington, and strategists wonder how else to make immigration
reform a higher priority in light of the nation’s sputtering economy.

ROSWELL, Ga. - Like all illegal immigrants, Lorenzo Jimenez knew the
knock on the door from immigration agents could come at any time.
Still, he had enough faith in the American dream to buy a house in
this Atlanta suburb, even though signing the papers meant raising the
risk: He put his 2-year-old, American-born daughter's name and Social
Security number on the title.
And it worked, for a while. Jimenez and his family lived happily enough for several years alongside "regular" citizens.
Nicole Griffin's mom lived a few doors away, and when Griffin
visited, she said, her kids played with the Jimenez children. When
Jimenez put his four-bedroom, two-bathroom home up for sale last
spring, wanting more space, Griffin was immediately interested.

New Immigration Regulation Eased After Firms Complain
Homeland Security Measure Requires Checks of New Hires
In a concession to business groups, the Homeland Security Department
will significantly scale back its planned crackdown this winter on
federal contractors that hire illegal immigrants.
Under a rule published yesterday, the agency said only contractors that
do more than $100,000 in federal work will be required to use an
electronic government system to check the work documents of new hires.
Originally, officials had proposed that companies doing $3,000 in
federal work must comply.
The agency also said it would require federal contractors to check
only laborers used on specific contracts, instead of their entire
workforce.
The revisions significantly reduce the number of companies that
will be subject to the program, which will apply to federal contracts
and solicitations issued after Jan. 15. The Bush administration had
hoped to make the work eligibility system, called E-Verify, mandatory
for nearly 200,000 government contractors, covering about 4 million
U.S. workers over 10 years.

An immigration activist says the Republican Party lost any real chance of retaining the White House the day John McCain won the GOP primary.
William Gheen is president of Americans for Legal Immigration PAC, or ALIPAC. Throughout the presidential campaign, Gheen ardently refused to support John McCain because of the Arizona senator's continued support to grant amnesty to millions of illegal aliens.
Gheen believes McCain was counting on GOP voters to march into the booths at the last minute, hold their noses, and elect him out of fear of Obama. He notes while many Republicans reluctantly made that choice, a significant group withheld their support or voted in opposition to McCain.

In an interview Friday, Graham said that Obama requested the meeting during a 20-minute phone call that the South Carolina senator described as a "pleasant" discussion about how they could work together effectively.
"We just talked about the desire to find something meaningful to work on," Graham said. "He was very nice to me, said that he considered me a serious, reform-minded senator that he could do business with."

BOSTON (AP) — Zeituni Onyango came to the United States seeking asylum from her native Kenya but was turned down and ordered to leave the country in 2004.
Four years later, she is still here. And her nephew is about to become president of the United States.
Onyango's family connection to Barack Obama has thrown a spotlight on a phenomenon many Americans might find startling: An estimated half-million immigrants are living in the United States in defiance of deportation orders.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has stepped up efforts to catch fugitive aliens, as they are known, and now has about 100 "fugitive operations teams" around the country. In the past year, the teams have made 34,000 arrests, more than double the number two years ago. But there are still 560,000 such immigrants in the U.S.
