Tancredo Calls for Pardon for Border Agents amid Guilty Plea from Star Witness

Davila pleads guilty to drug smuggling during Border Agents trial

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Littleton) today renewed his call for a pardon for Border Tom TancredoAgents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean after the government’s main witness in the original trial, Osvaldo Aldrete Davila, pleaded guilty to charges of drug smuggling. The charges stem from two shipments of drugs Davila was caught bringing into the country during the Ramos and Compean trial.

“How can we let Ramos and Compean rot in a jail cell based on the testimony of a 3-time drug smuggler?” Tancredo said. “The legitimacy of this verdict seems to diminish with each passing day.”

Davila was given immunity for the first shipment of drugs he brought into the United States in which he was shot in the buttocks by Agents Ramos and Compean who attempted to apprehend him. They are serving 11 and 12 year sentences for defending the border. Davila was also given free border crossing cards and access to health care.

Tancredo concluded, “Along with a pardon or commutation of Ramos and Compean, I hope Mr. Davila will be given at least 12 years in prison at the very least – the same sentence Agent Compean received for doing his job.”

Tom Tancredo, a lifelong Coloradan and native of Denver, represents Colorado's 6th Congressional district. The Littleton-based district stretches across Douglas County, much of Jefferson County, Evergreen in the mountains, and portions of Park County in the west. To the east, the district encompasses parts of Arapahoe County and Elbert County.

Tom is a school teacher by trade; and taught for several years at Drake Junior High before serving in the Colorado Legislature and in the Department of Education for former presidents Reagan and Bush. He also headed up the Independence Institute, a libertarian think tank based in Golden, prior to being elected to Congress in 1998.
