New Mexico Border Patrol Agents Snag Criminal Attempting to Sneak Across Border

Santa Teresa, N.M. March 26, 2008 – Border Patrol agents assigned to the Santa Teresa Station arrested a man who was previously convicted of Aggravated Assault as he attempted to enter the country illegally through New Mexico on Tuesday.

At approximately 12:30 a.m., Border Patrol agents from the Santa Teresa station observed a male suspect as he attempted to enter the United States illegally by crossing the international border near Sunland Park, N.M. Agents were able to respond quickly and apprehended the individual before he could make his way into the United States. The individual was found to have entered in the zero tolerance zone dubbed “Operation Lockdown” and was transported to the Santa Teresa Border Patrol Station to be processed.

During processing, the individual was entered into the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS) where record checks revealed that he was a Mexican citizen with an extensive criminal history. The subject was identified as a 33-year-old undocumented alien with a criminal record that includes a conviction of five counts of Aggravated Assault with a deadly weapon in Santa Fe, N.M.

The subject was turned over to the Otero County Prison to await removal proceedings.

This latest arrest exemplifies the ongoing efforts by the Border Patrol to combat cross border criminal activities and the success of ongoing operations such as “Lockdown”.
