El Universal  (Mexico City)  1/21/08

1.   Tijuana Police is "infested" with people linked to criminal groups and will be subjected to a "major purge" since this is the only alternative to stop the wave of executions within the department.

2.   In Tijuana, federal police seized a "training facility" of the Arellano Felix drug cartel; the locale had an armory, an arsenal and a firing range. There were no arrests.
The "federales" went to Reforma Ave. #716, Colonia Independencia, Tijuana, a two story facility that housed an arts & crafts shop across the street from an elementary school.
A room by room search led to the discovery of a "perfectly camouflaged" movable bathroom sink, behind which was an entry way down into a full basement, where a firing range was located. (note: an accompanying photo shows four target stands side by side). The range was said to be in excellent condition.
Also found at the facility: 24 shoulder weapons including three machine guns and 200 clips, five vehicles (three of them armored) and 30,000 (thirty thousand) rounds of ammunition of different calibers.

El Diario  (Juarez, Chihuahua)  1/21/08

(note: the following item was recorded in at the paper's site at 00:39 a.m., Juarez time,  Jan. 21, '08)

A Juarez police captain became the 14th member of the Juarez Police force to be murdered in the last thirteen months. Of the fourteen, only one died in the course of attempting to stop some thieves, while of the other thirteen all but one are believed to have been victims of gunfire execution by criminal groups. One was run over on purpose; the rest were victims of gunfire whether walking out of their home, riding in a vehicle or just being out on the street.

(note: this second item was recorded in at 9:07 a.m., Juarez time, Jan. 21, '08)

Francisco Ledezma, Operations Coordinator for the Juarez Police, was in his vehicle in front of his house this morning when he was shot and killed by gunfire believed to be from an AK47. His wife was also wounded since gunfire volleys were aimed toward the house.
