El Diario de Yucatan (Merida, Yucatan) 6/16/08

Mexico’s Att’y. Gen., Eduardo Medina Mora, said that the amount of weapons seized from organized crime groups during the present administration would be sufficient to arm any Central American country.
5,000 weapons have been seized in just the first ten days of this month, which brings the total up to twenty-four thousand. He added that this represents a hard blow to the drug traffickers since they cannot access weapons at the same rate as that in which they are being seized.
At an interview prior to his departure from Spain, Pres. Calderon said that organized crime had challenged the State’s monopoly of power.

Critica (Sonora) 6/16/08

Three police officers were killed and two others wounded yesterday (Sun.) in a series of ambushes and confrontations with drug traffickers in and around Ciudad Obregon, Sonora and adjacent areas of Cajeme and Navojoa. One thug was wounded and eleven others arrested. An unspecified number of firearms, grenades, cash, vehicles and police uniforms was also seized.

El Diario & Norte (both Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua) 6/16/08

The bodies of seven persons were found in various parts of Ciudad Juarez from Saturday night until yesterday. (Sun.) One was found in the trunk of a car, while two others were executed after a chase and car crash. And a bar and two restaurants were set on fire, bringing to fourteen the tally of burned businesses, most of them bars and dance halls. Narco related messages of vengeance have been left in some of them.

El Porvenir (Monterrey, Nuevo Leon) 6/16/08

One kilo 300 gms. (equiv. to 2.86 lbs.) of heroin were found in the double bottom of a plastic ice chest at the refrigerated cargo section of the Tijuana airport. The chest was full of shellfish and had arrived on a flight from Mazatlan.

El Universal (Mexico City) 6/16/08

After accepting the fact that many Juarez police officers are involved with organized crime, the mayor of Juarez said that they will clean up the department and that the process has already begun. He estimated that some two hundred of the sixteen hundred Juarez police officers will be purged. “We have the historic opportunity of cleansing the agency of bad personnel.” He said he didn’t believe the percentage of officers purged would reach the 30% figure, which represents 500 officers, something “catastrophic.”

La Prensa Grafica (San Salvador, El Salvador) 6/16/08

The “PNC” (”Policia Nacional Civil”) reported that there were six homicides this last weekend in the capital city of San Salvador. Thirteen others took place in other parts of the country.
