El Debate (Culiacán, Sinaloa)

1. A front page story reported the release from U.S. prison of Francisco Rafaél Arellano Félix and his return to Mexico. Arellano had been extradited to the U.S. in 2006 to complete a sentence for drug smuggling. His 10-year sentence included time served in Mexico while his case was pending. He is a presumed member of the cartel that bears his name. No charges are pending in Mexico and he is free to carry on his life.

2. Seven people, a woman and 6 men, were assassinated yesterday in Tijuana, Baja California, by a number of shots from large caliber arms followed by coup de grace shots to the head. The bodies showed signs of beatings.

El Porvenir (Monterrey, Nuevo León) 3/5/08

The Attorney General of Mexico City stated the failed bombing attempt of the Department of Justice of February 15 was ordered by a subject known as "El Patrón" (the boss) a resident of Mazatlán, Sinaloa. The motive for the bombing attempt was apparently in answer to three successful police operations that resulted in the seizures of important loads of arms in Mexico City. The Attorney General, Rodolfo Félix Cárdenas, indicated the target of the failed attempt was the Chief of Police, Julio César Sánchez Amaya.

El Universal (Mexico City) 3/5/08

1. A number of items from this news source and others were dedicated to the tense situation with Ecuador, Venezuela and Colombia after Colombia's incursion into Ecuador to raid an encampment of FARC, the Colombian guerilla revolutionaries. One female Mexican citizen was wounded in the attack. Mexico is concerned with the revelation that elements of FARC have been established in Mexico since last year.

2. Under the heading "NAFTA under judgment in U.S.," columnist Rogelio Ramirez de la O noted that the campaigns of Clinton and Obama both promise to revise the North American Trade Agreement because it has cost the U.S millions of jobs and poses a danger of recession and further unemployment. The columnist said "although totally logical, those statements are received by the Mexican government as threats." He criticized his government for lack of understanding and putting ideology before reality.

Headlined, "Wave of deaths continues in Tijuana." In the past 36 hours, 9 people have been reported assassinated, including 5 youths who were riddled with bullets.
