El Heraldo  (Tegucigalpa, Honduras)  6/30/08

Following in the wake of the scandal about issuance of unauthorized and /or illegal visas to Cubans to enter Honduras, the government has now halted the issuance of visas to Chinese citizens until the investigation relating to the Cubans is completed. Chinese enter Honduras and are admitted up to a certain length of time. They use this time or its extension to refine their contacts with smugglers to reach the United States illegally. Visa applications by Chinese to Honduras "exceed one hundred annually."

Frontera  (Tijuana, Baja Calif.)  6/30/08

A band of smugglers in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, rents stolen passports (read: U.S. issued border crossing I.D. cards) to persons with similar physical characteristics to help them cross the border. "Interested parties" pay some 470 dollars for the loan of the passport which they must return to an accompanying person once they are in the U.S.
Potential immigrants contact persons near the Santa Fe international bridge (leading to El Paso, Texas) and  have their picture taken in a house; the picture is then compared with hundreds of stolen passports which they have in their possession elsewhere. If they find one with enough likeness, it is rented so the person may cross, a method which "is effective" Thefts of passports have increased in and around Juarez in the last months. Data from the "INM" (Mex. Immigr.) indicate  that some 500 thousand Mexicans emigrate to the United States each year.
