La Jornada  (Mexico City)  6/21/08

There is a just released book titled “Migracion a Estados Unidos y la frontera norte” co-authored by Hector Rodriguez, “director of public policies doctorate” and researchers from the Advanced Studies of the Monterrey Technical Institute (Monterrey, Nuevo Leon.)  It states that during Vicente Fox’s administration approximately three million Mexicans left for the United States. Additionally, that this will continue “in similar fashion” since in Felipe Calderon’s first year of government 470 thousand  co-nationals crossed the northern border.
The factors that bring about this situation are : a stalled gross domestic product, the fact that the creation of formal employment continues to be depressed, growth of real income has stopped and inflation is controlled artificially.

(Headline): Eleven dead, the result of a violent day yesterday in three states.
Police officials reported that the struggle between organized crime groups left a balance of eleven dead in the states of Sinaloa, Coahuila and Guerrero. (The article then goes on to furnish relating details of these events. The attachment to this report shows photographs published in a Tamaulipas paper on the same subject. Warning : they are graphic.)

El Diario  (Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua)  6/21/08

Yesterday a northbound 18-wheeler cleared Mex. Customs in Juarez; then it was searched by Mex. military before it could proceed to the U.S. side of the border crossing facility. Hidden inside: 104 boxes containing marihuana weighing a total of four thousand four hundred kilos.

El Universal  (Mexico City)  6/21/08

Mexican federal officials have ordered a top-to-bottom, in depth investigation of the “INM” (Instituto Nacional de Migracion; the Mex. Immigration gov’t. agency)  This has been triggered by the recent “kidnapping” of 37 undocumented aliens, an episode which  which revealed a network of people traffickers presumably composed of government officials and drug cartels. 33 of those were Cubans, 18 of whom were later found in the U.S. The investigation even includes the head on “INM”, Cecilia Romero, on possible charges of non-feasance. One of the lines of investigation mentions that after their “kidnapping” the 33 Cubans could have been furnished authentic original documentation by immigration officials and thus were able to travel through highway “filter” points.
