There are some stories that you just cannot get out of your head, the ones that leave you speechless, the ones that haunt you, that leave you asking is this all we have to look forward to… Deborah and Richard Poche live in one of those stories Richard is a pool maker by trade and his wife Deborah is battling cancer, if that isn’t bad enough they had moved back to New Orleans to help rebuild after Katrina, although Richard has now been sidelined all because of money and a government who refuses to keep her citizens safe. You see Richard was walking to check on his son at a birthday party when he was accosted by six men who wanted money and he said no, they choked him, bit off his thumb, slashed him with a knife severing his fingers, even biting him in the arm so hard teeth marks remain, he yelled cops they continued to beat him, he yelled ICE and they took off running, they say they feel like prisoners in their own home because of the drinking, the way they are always up front, he has to bring his tools up each night, they had to rent a storage shed and they can’t keep gas in their truck because they steal that too.

One can safely assume that when Richard went back to his hometown to help rebuild he never expected to have to fight for his life at least not with six men with knives, I am sure he was concerned about the debris, the potential for black mold and the myriad of diseases from the flood waters, but to live in constant fear because of your neighbors, because they believe they can take anything they want without repercussion. Then to be told by the cops, the people who are supposed to protect you that because they are illegal there is no process to prosecute them to find out that you are going to have to continue to live in hell because they cannot and will not stop the madness it makes you wonder if being American counts for anything anymore, now that they have spoken out it adds a new element of fear, the fear of retaliation and knowing that no matter what they do to you they will walk away Scot free, it makes you wonder what in the hell is going on.

This could be any one of us at any time, any place, no where is safe anymore and the law is powerless to stop them. Jails are now deporting them before they ever stand trial and face justice for what they have done to save money, which means that all they have to do is cross over again because our border is not secure. It makes you wonder just how many of those people marching with bandanas on their faces were hiding more than the fact that they committed a crime just by being here or if they were hiding their faces because they were wanted for something else. My X husband choked me once but a brother and a loaded .223 put an end to it, I can still remember running as fast as I could and collapsing in our driveway in tears, I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t think, my entire body was numb and there was not six men there constantly kicking, hitting and knifing me I am sure my mind would have just given up I doubt I would have had the strength to yell ICE or anything else, thank God this man did.

Is this what we have to look forward to? To be afraid to leave our homes? To have to hide everything we own? Is this what our streets are going to turn into? Because we allowed a breed of takers to take over because we were too afraid to say enough? It makes you want to double check your doors at night, it makes you want to look in on your kids just one more time, it makes you want to go out and buy a gun, it makes you want to scream because the people who have sworn to protect us have lied. Now we can just file this away with all the others who have either been killed or injured, we can go on about our lives saying this would never happen here. But when you are in the store parking lot, walking to your car and suddenly a car appears from no where and it seems to be following you, or your daughter who is usually home promptly at ten o’clock is now two hours late, or you notice the next morning when you go to leave that the full tank of gas you had is now almost empty, will you remember all of those stories? Will you finally admit not only can it happen here, it is.
