It is the persistent ignorance of Islam that is the greatest danger to the West because an Islamo-fascist element of the more than one billion people who call themselves Muslims has declared war on the West. Its aim is to impose sharia, Islamic law, and to reinstitute the caliphate that rules much of the Middle East and northern Africa until the fall of the Ottoman Empire in 1918.

Now another book, “Why We left Islam: Former Muslims Speak Out”, has been published by WND Books. It is shorter than Warraq’s and is a softcover. Noted Middle East expert, Daniel Pipes, says that, “The right of Muslims freely to leave Islam is emerging as an international human rights issue of the first order.” He calls the book’s stories “vivid” with profound political implications.

One remarkable fact leaps from the pages of the softcover. In its introduction, its editors note that, “While many in the West continue to wrestle with whether radical Islam’s hatred of the West is inspired by American foreign policy or due to its support for the state of Israel, many radical Muslims see the present jihad against the West as a continuation of a battle lost on none other than September 11, 1683.”

That was the day Western forces in Vienna defeated the army of the Islamic Ottoman Empire. Had that not occurred, nor an earlier the defeat of the Muslims at Poiters, France, Islam would have ruled all of Europe. The single objective of Islam is to rule the world.

First, however, it must exert total control over the lives of those born into it or who convert. The very definition of Islam is “submission.” That’s why it is useful, even essential, that we learn about the lives of ordinary Muslims, people who have left the faith, often having to abandon their families in the process.

“When I look around the Islamic world, all I find is utter injustice, unabated discrimination against women and kafirs (unbelievers), and blatant abuse and violation of human rights, not to mention the absolute political corruption in Islamic countries,” wrote one contributor to “Why We Left Islam.” He has described the reason for all the problems the United States and the West have encountered in the past and encounter now in an impossible effort to bring enlightenment and democracy to the Middle East.

“The Koran is full of verses that teach killing of unbelievers and how Allah will torture them after they die. There are no lessons on morality, justice, honesty, or love. The only message of the Koran is to believe in Allah and his messenger,” wrote another contributor. To those in the West raised on the Old and New Testaments, this seems impossible, but you only have to read the daily headlines of the murders occurring in the Middle East and elsewhere, all in the name of Islam, to believe it.

“Muslims are cocooned in lies. Because speaking against Islam is a crime punishable by death, no one dares to tell the truth.”

We can and should have sympathy for Muslims, but only to the point that we do not tolerate their intolerance. Yielding to their demands, as has widely been the case throughout Europe, undermines the values and beliefs of Western civilization. Of late, however, Europeans are beginning to resist.

America’s tradition of religious tolerance is going to be particularly tested. I am reminded, though, of a comment I read in 2001, “All I know about Islam I learned on 9/11.” It’s a lesson we in the West dare not forget.
